What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is the therapeutic use of art to help people express their thoughts and emotions.  Art therapy promotes insight and healing in the person creating the artwork.  Art therapists use art as a tool to help people cope with problems in a positive manner.  Art therapists believe that art can tap into a person's conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings.  Creating artwork can help people view their problems objectively by taking the problem out of their mind and putting it into their artwork.  Art therapy has many benefits such as; stimulating creativity, promoting self-expression, reducing stress, processing traumatic events, increasing self-esteem, and promoting creative problem solving.

 

Professional Counseling Services

Harvest Moon Art Therapy Studio offers art therapy and traditional mental health counseling (talk-therapy) sessions for children, adolescents, and adults who are feeling stressed.  Sessions take place with a compassionate, life-affirming and supportive therapist.  Sessions may take place in the studio, over the phone, or over the internet.

 

Here is a list of common stressors:

  1. Loss or death of a loved one
  2. Financial problems
  3. Medical problems or mood disorders
  4. Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD
  5. Family members who are angry, oppositional or defiant
  6. Trauma due to physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse
  7. Drug and/or alchohol abuse
  8. Life changes (having a baby, moving, new job, retirement, new school, etc.)
  9. Negative self-image
  10. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues

Stressful events like the ones mentioned above can trigger negative reactions.  Often our reactions to stressful events takes our attention away from what is important in our lives.  Obstacles frequently get in our way and block us from achieving our goals which can also make people feel stressed.  Therapists can help people identify obstacles and eliminate them so that they can achieve their goals.  Therapists can help people discover what is important to them and teach them coping skills to deal with stress so they can live successful and productive lives.
